In my house, Christmas happened yesterday because my husband is working today, and I am mentally onto New Year’s. What’s that, you’re still on Christmas? How embarrassing. Well, for those who are *snicker* still on Christmas, Merry Christmas! For the progressive, forward thinking few, here’s a little roundup of my year.
Things I Accomplished This Year:
Got engaged
Got married
Had a baby
Learned what an “Uppababy” is (it’s a stroller)
Learned how to use an Uppababy (it’s easier than it sounds)
Learned how to spell “Connecticut” (it’s harder than it sounds)
Finally finished The Crown (much harder than it sounds, and perhaps my largest feat of all)
Started a Substack (thanks for reading!)
Quit Twitter (but apparently we still have to do Notes and Threads)
Survived on less sleep than I thought to be possible (see bullets 2-3)
Things I Failed To Accomplish This Year:
Actually finishing The Crown (now there’s a William season!? UGH!)
Something about the environment?
Figured out how I feel about accent walls
Hopes, Goals, & Dreams For Next Year:
Figure out how to fold a fitted sheet (no one knows)
Figure out how I feel about accent walls
Something about the environment?
Magically wake up with the discerning taste and monochrome game of a seasoned interior decorator (trying to decide how much blue is too much blue literally keeps me up at night)
Beat AI at it’s own game (I also can draw people with poorly constructed faces and write a mediocre book report on the War of 1812)
Be a good mom
Finish The Crown, I guess (though I feel about it the way I think Brits feel about the monarchy, aspirationally appealing though ultimately unnecessary.)
What else…what else?
Something to watch: If you hate action and adore subtext, you’ll love Oscar bait that checks so many Academy boxes it could only have been created by AI Maestro, now on Netflix!
Something to read: My friend and talented comedian, Sarah Cooper wrote a very funny memoir called Foolish: Tales of Assimilation, Determination, and Humiliation.
Something to think about: Yes, my hipster new mom is showing, but I listened to a Dr. Becky podcast episode on “Reclaiming” the holidays, which suggests people consider which holiday traditions they want to practice in their own family/adulthood and why. If you hate classic Christmas fare, by all means, make your house the one that does a sushi feast.
Happy Holidays, everyone!
Your first accomplishments on this list is enough to last you for the next two years! No need to add goals for 2024, keep swimming in the awesome work you did in 2023!
